Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual country with a population of over 19.6 million. Her illustrious history dates back over 2,500 years, to a time when it was ruled by powerful kings, who created elaborate integration systems, some of which are still in use.

Sri Lanka has been colonized from the 16th to the 20th century by succession of European nations, firstly by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British. The British no doubt have left a big impression on the country; the architecture see in the business capital along with the main sports followed clearly reflects this.
Cricket and Rugby have soared in popularity, since the British first introduced them. Sri Lanka has experienced a cricketing renaissance in the last 10 years with the national team lifting the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka’s topology and tropical location results in the country having long sunny spells and seasonal rains, these conditions favor cultivation of crops such as tea, rubber, coconuts & spices. Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s leading exports and the island has made a name from production the best teas in the world.

Colombo, the financial, commercial and industrial capital of the nation is the hub of commercial activity in the island and is fast becoming a business and telecommunications hotspot for the whole region. Colombo which has a population of over two million is however not the capital of the pearl of the Indian Ocean, another name given to the beautiful island. Sri Jayewardenepura only 5 Km east of Colombo is the capital.

Sri Lanka’s colorful history along with the stunning scenery and locations on offer makes it one of the best tourist destinations in the region. The exotic beaches and beautiful scenery in the mountains all situated within a couple of each other an irresistible destination for the holiday seeker world-wide. The internal conflict that was, is the only reason for Sri Lanka not being on the most popular destinations, however with tensions eased and the war stopped for over two years, she is fast achieving that status.

With the merger of Sri Lanka telecom, the islands largest telecommunications provider with Japan’s NTT communications, Sri Lanka has a very competitive & one of the fastest developing telecommunications market’s in South East Asia. Sri Lanka is well served by all the major international airlines and also offers very efficient and cost effective air & sea freight services.

Sri Lanka with the proper infrastructure in place is now poised to offer good IT training and services. There have been a growing number of institutes both private and university based, offering training courses and degrees in Programming, Software Engineering, Systems Analysis & Systems Design. The bulk of these are of very good standard, either approved by the government or courses of the highest caliber from well recognized Foreign Institutions and Universities. Sri Lanka has been quick to recognize the global IT conditions and adapt to them, this is evident with the
Setting up of call centers of major companies in the island. Excellent economic conditions and good IT infrastructure has Sri Lanka ready to take the next step in its development, to the forefront of the global IT industry.
