Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and
multi-lingual country with a population of over 19.6
million. Her illustrious history dates back over
2,500 years, to a time when it was ruled by powerful
kings, who created elaborate integration systems,
some of which are still in use.
Sri Lanka has been colonized from the 16th to the
20th century by succession of European nations,
firstly by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and
finally the British. The British no doubt have left
a big impression on the country; the architecture
see in the business capital along with the main
sports followed clearly reflects this.
Cricket and Rugby have soared in popularity, since
the British first introduced them. Sri Lanka has
experienced a cricketing renaissance in the last 10
years with the national team lifting the 1996
Cricket World Cup.
Sri Lanka’s topology and tropical location results
in the country having long sunny spells and seasonal
rains, these conditions favor cultivation of crops
such as tea, rubber, coconuts & spices. Tea is one
of Sri Lanka’s leading exports and the island has
made a name from production the best teas in the
world.
Colombo, the financial, commercial and industrial
capital of the nation is the hub of commercial
activity in the island and is fast becoming a
business and telecommunications hotspot for the
whole region. Colombo which has a population of over
two million is however not the capital of the pearl
of the Indian Ocean, another name given to the
beautiful island. Sri Jayewardenepura only 5 Km east
of Colombo is the capital.
